Shale Report
Tue, 17 Mar 2009

We have had a lot of positive feedback on the improvement the shale has made on the roads. Using shale has been a cost-saving measure which is proving to be even more effective than what we had anticipated. Especially in the larger pot holes the shale is hardening to a very durable consistency.

We have been using shale because “cold asphalt,” which is what has to be used during cold weather, is $87.00 per ton and does not stay in the holes very well once the weather warms up. It seems only responsible to use shale, which costs 55 cents per ton. When the weather becomes consistently warm, we will be going back over the roads filling pot holes with “hot asphalt.”
