On Jan. 20, District 2 Commissioner Michael Pearson asked the Logan County Board of Commissioners to approve a resolution ordering the equal division of highway funds between the three districts. It was approved by a 2-1 vote.
Pearson wishes to equally divide funds due to the heavy traffic load on Logan County roadways in districts receiving the least funding. Pearson explained that in keeping with Oklahoma Statute, it should be a priority of the commission to fund roads being used by the most people.
Pearson stopped short of asking for an even larger portion of the funds to be sent to the heavily trafficked areas because he wants to be fair to all districts. “I believe funding should be equally divided like it is in most counties in Oklahoma, but I am also committed to looking at other options for increasing the funding we need for growth area roads.”
Pearson said that evenly allotting highway funds between the districts had been done up until 2003 when the Commission abandoned the policy. As a result of that decision, Pearson said District 2 citizens have lost out on over $300,000 of road money.
